GB/T 27630 was issued in 2011, and is widely used by OEMs in the automotive industry for assessing VOCs and SVOCs in vehicle interior air.

What’s involved in GB/T 27630?

GB/T 27630 (“Guideline for air quality assessment of passenger cars”) was issued in 2011 by the Chinese Ministry of Environmental Protection, and defines the sampling and analytical method for the identification of eight compounds (benzene, toluene, xylene, ethylbenzene, styrene, formaldehyde, acetaldehyde and acrolein) from vehicle cabins.

Sampling is carried out in accordance with Chinese EPA Method HJ/T 400 (‘Determination of volatile organic compounds and carbonyl compounds in cabins of vehicles).

There are two types of sample collection tubes:

  • Sorbent tubes for collecting VOCs and SVOCs, with analysis by GC–MS.
  • DNPH cartridges for collecting formaldehyde and other carbonyl compounds, with analysis by HPLC.

Responsibility for meeting the requirements of GB/T 27630 is passed successively down the manufacturing chain to component manufacturers and raw material suppliers. This means that suppliers at all stages of the manufacturing chain need to be able to carry out testing of their products and materials in order to identify components causing high chemical emissions, and also to facilitate the development of low-emitting alternatives.

Complying with GB/T 27630 and HJ/T 400

In GB/T 27630, features such as leak-checking, internal standard addition, and dry-purging of tubes are recommended as analytical instrument capabilities.
