Applications Specialist – Extraction & Enrichment (E&E)

Reports to: Market Application Specialist
Location: UK

In this role you will work as part of the Extraction & Enrichment (E&E) Business Unit evaluating & testing new and innovative applications and accessories for the E&E product range.

Primary responsibilities:

  •  To develop exceptional hands-on and theoretical knowledge of Markes’ E&E product range with Gas Chromatography (GC) and/or Mass Spectrometer (MS)
  • To fully develop & validate new applications across the E&E product range including sample handling & preparation, complete method development & specification etc.
  • To write a variety of reports & application documentation following the method development work to promote the advantages of Markes E&E equipment & the consequent benefits to customers. These will include concise “Application Briefing Notes”, more comprehensive Application documents & conference presentations, through to fully referenced papers for peer-review journals
  •  Disseminate the application information to salespeople & customers through a variety of media e.g. face-to-face meetings, conferences, webinars and training documentation
  • To contribute to the continuous development & improvement of the Extraction & Enrichment product portfolio with input to product specifications and participation in test and evaluation of development instruments, software & projects
  • To liaise with and provide technical support to production, marketing, sales and service as required.
  • Continuously develop and maintain knowledge of competitor’s products & applications, as well as any changes in customer requirements (e.g. regulatory compliance) to ensure that our product portfolio includes everything necessary to meet those requirements.
  • Although the role is based at our UK headquarters, there may be a requirement for occasional travel (primarily overseas) to customer sites and Markes subsidiary offices.

The successful candidate will:

  • Have a degree or higher degree (or equivalent) in a physical science
  • Have a solid theoretical understanding of chromatography; hands on experience of GC (or HPLC) and Mass Spectrometry is essential  Have experience in application development and be meticulous in documenting the process
  • Have a proven logical approach to problem solving and a meticulous attention to detail
  • Be articulate in both written and verbal communications with excellent presentation skills
  • Be able to follow procedures but also be capable of “thinking on your feet” and exhibiting proactive behaviours



Product Marketing Manager – Thermal Desorption (TD)

Reports to: Business Unit Manager - TD        
Location: UK

Maintaining the company’s leadership and reputation for innovation in thermal desorption is critical for the company’s long-term growth plans. This vital and exciting post will report directly to the Thermal Desorption Business Unit Manager and form a key part of the technical marketing team within the business unit. The Product Marketing Manager is a vital link between product and application development, the business and market development teams, and the commercial teams. The PMM will work closely with market development and the other business units to develop, continually reassess and implement a strategy for optimising growth of Markes’ core thermal desorption instrument business across all applicable markets and geographies.

Primary Responsibilities:

The role involves, but is not limited to, the following responsibilities:

Strategy and Business Development:

  • Working in close liaison with the market development team to pro-actively investigate new market opportunities – e.g. evolving customer needs, market trends, new technologies, regulatory changes and competitive activity – and oversee the objective assessment, quantification and prioritisation of associated new product requirements
  • Translating product and market requirements into clear specifications for development projects.,
  • In close collaboration with the product development team ensure timely execution of new product developments
  •  Maximise the effectiveness of new product launches, internally and externally, planning the necessary sales training, marketing activities and communication strategy.
  • Partner with market development to identify and cultivate relationships with key opinion leaders, providing scientific input and owning the overall outcome in the form of peer reviewed papers, application notes, conference presentations etc.

Owning and overseeing product marketing activities including:

  • Update, continuously reassess and ultimately own the messaging and positioning of Markes TD products by developing and executing marketing campaigns including technical notes, infographics, blogs, videos and webinars.
  • Represent the group by presenting at relevant conferences, seminars user groups and customer meetings.
  • Monitoring all competitive activities and responding appropriately generating the necessary marketing/sales documentation
  • Closely working with the Marcom team to:
    • Maintain Markes’ TD market profile and awareness
    • Plan, develop and drive relevant product marketing campaigns to generate new contacts in the Company’s CRM
    • Participate in events, contributing to relevant scientific or trade press
    • Optimising our use of the web and B2B social media Sales Support and Motivation:
  • Ensuring Markes’ various sales channels are trained and equipped to sell our TD products effectively
  • Maintaining regular contact with Sales and distribution channels via joint customer visits, support of events, regular e-news bulletins, etc.
  • Measure the sales effectiveness, by product, geography, etc. and drive the development of new sales channels for TD instruments when and where required

The successful candidate will:

  • Have a degree or higher degree (or equivalent) in analytical chemistry or a similar discipline.
  • Have a good technical background in chromatography and mass spectrometry, GC–MS experience would be highly desirable.
  • Have a minimum of 3 years’ experience working in the field of instrumental analysis, either for an instrument vendor or as an end user. (Industrial, government or academic research)
  • The candidate should have excellent written and verbal communication skills and have experience writing technical documents in the form of peer reviewed publications, application notes or journal articles.
  • The candidate should have experience presenting to the wider scientific community at conferences, seminars or webinars.
  •  A background in scientific marketing with experience developing marketing collateral and contributing to the planning and execution of campaigns would be highly beneficial.
  • Experience in selling, marketing, or developing analytical instrumentation for gas chromatography or a related analytical instrumentation sector would be highly beneficial.
  • Experience with a range of GC sample introduction techniques would be highly beneficial including thermal desorption, pyrolysis, SPME, headspace and purge and trap.
  •  Project management skills and experience would be highly beneficial.

Required Qualifications:
