Environmental monitoring – Ambient air
Air toxics
Also known as ‘hazardous air pollutants’ (HAPs), ‘air toxics’ span a range of volatilities and polarities, and are monitored in many industrial and urban environments as a measure of air quality.
Ultra-volatiles
Ozone precursors, odorous compounds and halogenated greenhouse gases together form a group known as ‘ultra-volatiles’, which because of their low boiling points are often monitored using on-line techniques.
Semi-volatiles
Semi-volatile organic compounds (SVOCs) are widely dispersed in the environment, and include such well-recognised and persistent pollutants such as polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons, polychlorinated biphenyls and phthalates.
Biogenics
Volatile organic compounds (VOCs) emitted by plants, moulds and other life-forms (including marine organisms) are known as biogenics, and are of particular research interest because of their effect on regional and global atmospheric chemistry.
Indoor air
Pollutants released by materials and products used indoors, and by activities such as cooking and smoking, are the cause of increasing health concerns, with relevant compounds spanning a wide range of volatilities.
Landfill
Many of the airborne compounds released from landfill sites can be toxic and/or odorous, with monitoring of VOC emissions at landfill sites now enshrined in European legislation.
