US construction products regulations

A consortium of American agencies (including the national standards agency ANSI, the indoor air quality interest group ASHRAE, the International Code Council, ASTM International and the American Institute of Architects) are working on a project to incorporate emissions testing into US building codes for public building projects. These include:

  • LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) certification provides independent verification that a building has been designed and built with sustainability and environmental quality in mind (including selection of materials). A new version is currently being drafted.

  • In 2004 the California Department of Public Health, formerly the Department of Health Services, expanded several sub-sections of the indoor air quality part of California Specification 01350 through the development of a ‘standard practice’. A new version was released in 2010.

  • The US EPA’s Environmentally Preferable Purchasing scheme helps the federal government ‘buy green’, and in doing so, uses the federal government's enormous buying power to stimulate market demand for green products and services.

  • In January 2012 NSF International and the Underwriters Laboratory announced the joint development of a health-based standard, NSF/UL 440, that addresses chemical emissions from products. The standard will be developed to comply with ANSI’s ‘essential requirements’ for adoption as an ANSI standard.
