Wales-based scientific instrument manufacturer Markes International proved their talents as marketers as well as manufacturers of innovative products for trace organic analysis last Friday (10 October 2014), when the company scooped not one but two awards at the Chartered Institute of Marketing’s (CIM) Canmol: Wales Marketing Awards.

Markes received the award in the “Technology and Energy” category, and were also awarded the “Best of Best” trophy sponsored by Exterion Media Ltd for the launch campaign of their Select-eV variable-energy ionisation technology for mass spectrometry – in doing so beating many household brands.

Commenting on the Markes campaign, Canmol judge Simon Campbell-Davies said “One of the key ideas we liked about this campaign was Markes’ ability to think outside of the conventional box.”

“The campaign itself was very complex and involved multiple media channels. Objectives were clearly laid out for the campaign and there were clearly defined measurables. With a modest budget Markes have already achieved some very impressive sales and, more importantly, an even more impressive pipeline of future leads and potential future sales that are likely to come going forward.”

Dr Gavin Davies, Marketing Manager at Markes International, picked up the company’s Canmol awards during a glittering ceremony held at St David’s Hotel, Cardiff.

He said “Our campaign broke away from the established way of doing things in our industry. We strove for creativity when developing our marketing tactics, to generate interest at a level that would have been impossible by relying solely upon the traditional, ‘old-school’ marketing tactics common in this industry.”

“Having our efforts recognised by The Chartered Institute of Marketing at this year’s Canmol awards really substantiates the work that we have been doing. This is an achievement everyone within the team can be proud of.”

Richard Houdmont, Director for Wales of The Chartered Institute of Marketing, said “The Canmol awards are designed to celebrate the outstanding business results that have been achieved over the past year through innovative and creative marketing.”

“The strength of this year’s winning campaigns makes me immensely proud of our marketing professionals and the work they are doing to drive forward the industry here in Wales. I’d like to congratulate the winners and encourage them to continue working hard to set the benchmark for marketers across the country.”

Joining Markes International in their Canmol success were eight marketing teams from a mix of public sector organisations, renowned Welsh brands and SMEs. Winners included Visit Swansea Bay and Peter’s Food Services Ltd – who both picked up an award for the second year in a row – as well as Arriva Trains Wales and the Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama. Cardiff-based agency Golley Slater and S4C also triumphed at the ceremony – Golley Slater picked up an award for its advertising project with Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV, while S4C was commended for its campaign promoting the hit show Hinterland.

A panel of 27 business and marketing experts were responsible for selecting the winners under the chairmanship of Dr Jonathan Deacon, South Wales Business School, University of South Wales, and vice-chair of the CIM Board of Trustees.
