New Application Note on TO-15 canister analysis

A new Application Note has recently been released by Markes, covering the use of the company’s thermal desorption pre-concentration equipment to monitor volatile ‘air toxics’ in accordance with US EPA Method TO-15.
Method TO-15, which involves sampling of ambient air using canisters followed by TD–GC–MS analysis, is widely used by commercial laboratories for analysis of potentially harmful airborne vapours in urban and industrial settings, especially in the US and Asia. However, traditional monitoring equipment is increasingly challenged by the ever-greater range of analytes and concentrations of interest, and by variations in temperatures and humidities at sampling locations.
The new study describes how these difficulties can be overcome by using Markes’ CIA Advantage–UNITY canister pre-concentrator, coupled with the recently-launched Kori-xr water condenser. The entire system operates cryogen-free, and is shown to provide outstanding performance for the analysis of VOCs in humid air streams.
The report describes analysis of a 65-component standard mix, containing compounds spanning the full TO-15 volatility range, at 50%, 75% and 100% relative humidity. At all three humidity levels, overall performance was well within the requirements of Method TO-15, with excellent system linearities, method detection limits as low as 4 pptv, and mean reproducibilities <10%.
