Award for variable-energy ionisation technology caps a year of success for Markes International

Markes International has once more received an accolade for its Select-eV variable-energy ionisation technology for GC–MS – this time as part of The Analytical Scientist Innovation Awards (TASIAs). This follows on from a year of success for this ground-breaking technology, cementing its standing as one of the top innovations in the analytical sciences in 2014.
Select-eV was judged in fourth place in the latest awards, which are run by the editorial team of industry magazine The Analytical Scientist, with advice from three independent experts in mass spectrometry and chromatographic techniques – Professor Hans-Gerd Janssen, Professor Robert Kennedy and Dr Oscar van den Brink.
Editor of The Analytical Scientist, Rich Whitworth, said “Our first TASIAs in 2013 set a worryingly high benchmark for all subsequent awards. I am delighted to report that the 2014 TASIAs easily hit that benchmark and feature 15 truly innovative advances, many of which we expect to have game-changing implications in analytical science”.
The award follows on from a year of success for Select-eV, which first received an ‘Honorable Mention’ at the prestigous Pittcon Editors’ Awards in March, judged by a panel of 200 accredited media representatives. October then saw Select-eV scoop ‘Best of best’ at the ‘Canmol: Wales Marketing Awards’.
Select-eV, which enables the electron ionisation energy to be varied from 70 to 10 eV at the push of a button and without loss of sensitivity, was commended in the latest awards for “significantly improving lab efficiency by removing the obstacle of having to switch between EI and CI”. By allowing analysts to obtain both reference-quality 70 eV spectra and repeatable ‘soft-ionisation’ spectra for each sample within a single automated sequence, it greatly enhances the ability to distinguish between similar compounds and to confidently identify unknowns.
Dr Laura McGregor, mass spectrometry product marketing manager at Markes International, said “It’s been a great year for Select-eV, and this award rounds off an excellent year for Markes in general. We’re delighted to have done so well in this year’s TASIAs, and it’s particularly pleasing that our contribution has been recognised in the face of very strong competition.
