Enhanced crude oil fingerprinting by GCxGC-TOF MS with soft electron ionization
Despite the enhanced separation offered by GCxGC-TOF MS that makes it a popular choice for petrochemical analyses, the presence of mass spectral characteristics across entire chemical classes (such as the branched alkanes) can make identification of individual compounds difficult. This poster describes how Select-eV ion-source technology solves this problem, by allowing the analyst to switch between hard and soft electron ionisation without loss in sensitivity, simplifying the identification of isomers by providing enhanced molecular ions whilst retaining structurally-significant fragment ions.
Novel data-processing software for fast screening of complex petrochemicals
The comprehensive data processing needed to make full use of the data acquired by modern analytical techniques such GCxGC-TOF MS can often be a time-consuming process, and may require the knowledge of experienced laboratory staff. The novel software tools described in this poster simplify the comparison of complex chromatograms, allowing minor differences to be readily and automatically distinguished, while data deconvolution in real-time allows on-the-fly perception and qualification of target compounds.
